A Beginner’s Guide to Using Essential Oils in Your Home
Welcome to Grace and Ginger!
If you're new here—hi, I’m Brittany. And if you’re new to essential oils, you're in the right place. This blog was born out of my love for natural wellness, motherhood, and the belief that God designed plants with purpose. Today, we’re starting right where I did almost 10 years ago: with the basics.
“The fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.”
— Ezekiel 47:12
🌿 What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that come from leaves, flowers, roots, bark, and other parts of a plant. They carry the aroma and the therapeutic properties of the plant they came from—sort of like nature’s version of liquid gold.
They're not new. In fact, oils are deeply woven into biblical history. Frankincense and myrrh weren’t just fancy gifts—they were known for their healing, cleansing, and anointing properties. God created these tools, and they still work today.
🏡 Why Use Oils in the Home?
Because your home is the first place you can start living less toxic and more intentional. From what you breathe to what you clean with to what you put on your skin—every little swap adds up.
Essential oils can help:
Purify the air
Support immune health
Uplift or calm emotions
Promote better sleep
Replace toxic cleaners and candles
Support your body’s systems (respiratory, digestive, hormones, etc.)
And that’s just scratching the surface.
💧 How to Use Oils (Without Getting Overwhelmed)
Let’s keep it simple. There are 3 main ways to use oils:
1. Aromatically (in the air)
Diffuse a few drops in water using a diffuser
Inhale directly from the bottle or your palms
Make room sprays with oils and water in a spray bottle
2. Topically (on your skin)
Dilute with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba
Apply to your wrists, spine, bottom of feet, or area of concern
Use rollers for easy, ready-to-apply solutions
3. Internally (with specific oils and guidance)
Only use oils labeled for internal use (Young Living has a Vitality line)
Add to water, tea, or capsules—but only when you know it's safe
If you’re brand new, start with diffusing and simple rollers. You don’t have to know everything. Just start.
🛑 A Quick Word on Safety
Always dilute for kids and babies
Do a patch test when trying a new oil
Avoid sensitive areas like eyes and ears
Research or ask before using oils internally or during pregnancy
And most importantly—trust the process. You’re learning, and that’s enough.
🌱 My Personal Starter Kit Must-Haves
When I began, I started with a bundle that included these 5 oils I still use every single week:
Thieves – immune & cleaning powerhouse
Lavender – sleep, skin, calming
Peppermint – cooling, energy, tension
Lemon – detox, mood, cleaning
Frankincense – emotional support & skin
This was the kit that truly changed how I cared for my family. And I’m still using it 10 years later.
✨ Closing Encouragement
Starting anything new can feel overwhelming—but oils are meant to be simple, natural, and effective. Don’t overthink it. You don’t need a cabinet full of bottles to begin. You just need one drop, one oil, one step.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above…” – James 1:17
And yes—essential oils are one of those gifts. 💛
